Magazine cover

Examples of other magazine covers

This magazine cover is showing the artist Missy Elliott. The hodie, the chunky necklace and the earings suggests that she specialises in the rap genre. This also shows the representation of her age- just by looking at this cover, we can guess thats he is in her mid twenties because of her overall look. The way she is standing with her hands on her hips and looking suggests the conventional attitude that poeple may have whilst listening to this genre, creatibg a sense of her being the role model for others with the same interest.

The image if composed so that it contrencrates on these aspects and so that the audience will know straight away that this is a rap artist.
The logo of the magazine itself is behind the artist, making her stand out and showing her importance. Other text is hip hop like too for that it is bold and simple. The writing on her necklace spells 'cancer' with a picture of the star sign, already showing a bit of information about her.
The use of colour is quite clever here because the artist's clothing refelcts the colour of the background, and the text, suggesting the importance and respect for this artist.

Our inspiration- The Pierces

We have found these artists on youtube as our audience had recommended to us. It presents a band that cosists of two girls (a blond and a brunnette) exactly like me and Laura. The genre is also 'folk' and the girls are also using guitars.

Laura did more research into The Pierces and this is what she has found.

The Pierces
The Pierces are an American New York-based band consisting of sisters Allison and Catherine Pierce. Allison Margaret Pierce (born July 23, 1975) and Catherine Eleanor Pierce (born September 11, 1977) were born two years apart in Birmingham, Alabama. They traveled frequently and received home-schooling from their self-described hippie parents. Their father played the guitar in various bands, while their mother was a painter. Exposed to music and arts at an early age, the Pierce sisters grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel. As children, they were encouraged to explore their creative side and would perform at parties, weddings and churches. Allison started dancing at age three, and both sisters are accomplished ballerinas.

The Pierces are mainly based in NYC and consist of two sisters, Allison and Catherine Pierce hence their name, The Pierces. They origin from Birmingham, Alabama in the USA.
Genre of music: Psychedelic rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic folk, folk rock, folk pop, pop and rock. Years active 2000 - Present.

This shot is placed right at the beginning of the video and it shows the two band members growing through their audience to prepare perform to them.
They girls are in the middle of the shot because this suggest they are the important people in the shot in that time and all the attention and focus is on them.

With this shot, again, the most important prop is the old fashion camera and this represents the time period that are were in when shooting the video.
Also, on the right at the back, there is a lady wearing a pale, salmon colour dress which also could support that point about the time period.

Slightly further into the video when the singing begins, Allison (brown hair) is positioned in the center of the shot while Catherine is more left to show that she isn't as important at this point in time since Allison is about to introduce he first line of the song and they want to audience to concentrate on the person singing the song rather than other elements to the video.

This close-up shot behind Catherine suggest a positive atmosphere especially with the blue/green tones in the lighting because it contradicts the emotions the audience would associate it with.
Its bright and very bold colour to also represent party and having a good time while enjoying the performances.

Digipak

Key points

Initial ideas

Since the band’s name is 'Sound of the Sirens' my group and Laura thought that it would be a good idea to link the theme of Sirens with the front cover for our digipak.

I draw this picture to create a primary source from an inspiration that we found on the Internet when performing our research on Sirens. By adding different colours and texture to the picture, it gives the audience an idea of good and bad sides to Sirens themselves. But keeping the 'Malevolent Sirens' in black and white give the impression that it isn't as friendly and kind like the one above. Ronnie chose the contrast to emphasize on the duplicity of sirens.

We decided to spice it up a little by putting a simple and effective effect on it and this enriches the colours in the shot. By doing placing the black shade in the corners of the picture, it enhances the two main elements in the shot, the band members. We thought that it would be effective to do so because we wanted people to focus on the picture and link it to the music which has been produced

This is an idea we had for the back cover for the digipak. This picture was taken when we filmed the narrative in Shillingthorpe Park. The lighting in the shot suggest a happy, bright and perhaps relieved atmosphere which is what we wanted to apply for the audience.
Shannone edited the photo below to make it brighter to show happiness and as it is a path it is like it is saying it is leading you to happiness. I made sure that the colours popped so that it would stand out and be eye catching.

Our digipak

This is our final digipak. It is six panels and five of the six are our own pictures which I took myself and edited using Pixlr online. When we were deciding which pictures to use we made sure that they all were similar. We also decided to use the logo of the actual band as we thought that we should incorporate them in it in some way. The front panel is the bottom right picture. We thought that the picture was a simple and beautiful picture which would show happiness because of the bright colours but because it is simple it suits the genre as most digipaks and album covers of the folk genre as very simple. The writing on it is from the website dafont.com. I thought that the writing was simple and fitted the genre but it also looked good and stood out against the bright background. The panel next to it is the back panel. I also took that photo when we were at Shillingthorpe park and I thought that it was so beautiful that it should be used in our project in some way whether our music video or the advert or the digipak. I edited it on Pixlr, using a the black fade effect around the edges as I used on the front panel. It makes the colours of the picture stand out and makes you look at the picture but also the text that is on it. the text on it is the names and numbers of the tracks. The first one is our actual track and the rest are made up as you don't only have one song on a digipak. The panels next to that is the logo of the actual band. we didn't have any other pictures that would link with the others so we came up with the idea to use their logo. Above the logo panel is a picture from when we were doing the performance video. I cut the background out of the picture and stuck them on a olden wooden stage that you would see in folk videos and then washed out the colour to give it an olden photo effect but to make it simple and soft as well. The panel next to it is where the CD will go. Again I took the photo and edited it to make the colours bright and stand out and then put the name of the band underneath as if the band is suddenly being revealed when you take the CD out. The next panel is a picture of Ronnie and Laura as they are the performers they had to be included somewhere on the digipak. It is a simple photo of just the two of them so that you can see them.

Oasis album cover- definitely maybe Oasis album cover- definitely maybe

It is a photograph of the band, in a flat. Each member of the band has got different position in the house, suggesting an individual position in the band too.

The alcohol and cigarettes represents that they still have the typical rock and rool lifestyle however, the wine and BH cigarettes describe that the band is more safisticated than that.

The globe in the air could imply that they are well tarvelled and thus, impkying good and broad knowledge. The fact that is spinning could emphasize on the fact that they have been to may places.

The flat that they are in looks modern and safisticatred, mirroring the way the band is trying to percieve themselves as.

The painting showing a famous song writer implies that the band is on the same level as him. However, others may suggest that they are mocking this painting,  for that the frame has just been left on the floor, leant against the sofa with a member of the band actually sitting next to him, comfortable on the sofa, with a guitar in his arms.

The props such as the guitar emphasize on the fact that they are a band, slightly suggesting the rocky genre.

The font on this CD cover/digipak is uncoventionally neat as if to represent a different, more relaxed genre rather than rock. This creates a sense of gentleness. Both the logo and the texts are on the very top of the cover, with the intentions of the audience to concentrate on the band and what is going on on the cover, rather than the writing itself. This shows the importance of the band, also that they should be easily recognized.

Friday 8th November- second day filming

We have met up in deeping at 9:15 and Shannon's mum took us to our location, approximately 15 minutes away from Deeping. We had discovered a great place with loads of fields, trees and a river. This had enabled us to get a big variety of shots and experiments.

We also found a tree with a ladder on it, so i could climb up it and take good high angle shots of Laura running.

Bursts!!!

As previously mentioned in The Technology prezi (describing what technology we are going to use), I have shot Laura throwing leaves in the air. We thought this was a good idea because it has capturred every movement of the leaves with out the shots being blurred. This is because the "Burst" technique on my Experia Z. We also think that it quite conventional to a music promo as it goes with the beat of the song, and makes the video more appealing to watch for the audience, rather than a straight forward long shot.

Weather for Friday- second day filming

To make sure that everything goes by the plan for us on Friday, Laura has checked the weather to make sure that it won't be raining too much. We thought it would be better to check so we can make a back up plan if neccessary.

Wednesday filming

Where- Drama studio
Who- Laura and Me
Camera- Shannon
Props- Guitars, lighting, staging props, microphones, mice stands

Wednesday 6th November we came to school for half past 2, got changed into our costumes and did iur make up, and went down to the drama studio. It took us about 20 minutes to set up and about 20 minutes to get used to tempo and using a guitar. After that though we have put together some really good footages, showing different angles- (high angle, long angle, from side) and camera techniques- (close up shots, long shots, mid close ups etc). We finished  around about 5:30. Here are some stills tasters of our first day of production.

Ideas for CD cover- work on a photoshop

This is an initial idea for the title of teh CD cover. Similarly to the picture of the siren, i have hand drawn this first and then transported it onto Photoshop..

Whilst on the photoshop, i have decided that i do not want to have the paper background on the CD cover and thus, i have used the "eraser tool" and erased all the background, untill i was left with no paper. The writing is now 'not as neat', but decided to keep it like this because it carries a mysterious look, which goes well with the theme of sirens.
Finished cover!!

I have added i bit of colour to the siren and left the 'reflected siren' black and white. This is becasue i believe that black and white look most effective and scary, whereas i have chosen warm, welcoming colours for the siren above. I have chosen this contrast to emphasize on the duplicity of sirens.
