P!nk- Don't Let Me Get Me

P!nk is a rock artist/ singer. She is wild but her lyrics have mostly got a serious message behind it. Some may think that she seems agressive but i like her for i think that she is honest and speaks her mind via her songs- this maks them powerful and really well remembered.

I expect that her videos are going to be wild and with a fast beat. Also her audience are going to be females age 18+. This is because it is a rock genre and it tends to mostly attract 'adults' rather then teenagers.

In terms of props, i expect her to have a car, have blond/pink hair, guitar and her clothes are expected to be black.

She describes herself as a pop/rock artist

Acoustic music- Compromises music that solely or primarily uses intruments

Folk music- Is an english term encompassing both traditional folk music and contemporary folk music. The term originated from 19th century. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways; as music trasmitted by mouth, as music of the lower classes, and as music with unknown composers. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles.

History

Throughout most of human prehistory and history, listening to recorded music was not possible. Music was made by common people during both their work and leisure. The work of economic production was often manual and communal. Manual labor often included singing by the workers, which served several practical purposes. It reduced the boredom of repetitive tasks, it kept the rhythm during synchronized pushes and pulls, and it set the pace of many activities such as planting, weeding, reaping, threshing, weaving, and milling. In leisure time, singing and playing musical instruments were common forms of entertainment and history-telling—even more common than today, when electrically enabled technologies and widespread literacy make other forms of entertainment and information-sharing competitive.
Opinions differed on the origins of folk music. Some said it was art music that was changed and probably debased by oral transmission—others said it reflects the character of the race that produced it.Traditionally, the cultural transmission of folk music is through learning by ear, although notation may also be used. The competition of individual and collective theories of composition set different demarcations and relations of folk music with the music of tribal societies on the one hand and of "art" and "court" music on the other. The traditional cultures that did not rely upon written music or had less social stratification could not be readily categorized. In the proliferation of popular music genres, some traditional folk music became also referred to "World music" or "Roots music".

The American conception of "folk composition" has often drawn on Afro-American music

Conventions of music videos

Camera/ editing

Close up shots- these are quite conventional in music videos because twe tend to use them to emphasize on the syncing, rather then reaction shots that are used in thrillers.

Long shots- in music videos, they are conventionally used to emphasize on the size of something or like in this case, to contrast the lighting against the darkness that sorrounds her. The long shots also help us to create artistic shots- in this case, Lady Gaga is kneeling on her fours in a strange position- but it is effective.
Editing -
Pace changes every 2 seconds in thsi video- this is conventional because the pace needs to change to the rythm of the song, so it makes sense and it is not just the lyrics that make us move but the rapid change of shots too. PS: i love the way Avril is advertising the quality of the Sony phones here..

Mise-en-scene
Rock- Black eyeshadows, thick black eye liner and lots of mascara. Costumes are generally black with metal studs. Quite a bit of jewelly  and black nail polish is worn. The lighting is conventioanlly dark and gloomy but that depends on what type of rock it is. Rock mostly concentrates on instruments so the props would be guitar and microphone- in this case i think the main focus was the sony experia phone and the glass of water.

POP- is a lot more glamorous: the hair is glosier and the make up is a lot more tidier too. Pop gives music a very feminin touch when a woman is singing and popularity and when males are singing. The lighting is usually bright so that we can see the singer very well and so that the best light hits the singer's face so that it looks great on camera.

Faulk- is quite down to earth and the singers usually dress that way too. As we can see, the girls are wearing a jean material which is classed as casual and comfortable. The lighting is natural- no over exadurating.

Conventions of folk genre- ISL work (week 3)

Inspirational music videos

Beyonce- Halo

I find this music video inspirational because i like the wide range of close up shots that work well with the sub story of love.

The close ups underline the fact how happy and 'close' they are together. Also, the fact that Beyonce is not wearing any make-up in this, emphasizes the purity of their love and the lighting makes her look bright and fresh.
The camera is not steady in this part of the video too. This makes us think of a young couple videoing each other just for fun/ memories so again, we can see how happy they are.

Coldplay ft. Rhianna- princess of China

This si something a bit different to the Beyonce's music video. In this, we can already lots of bright colours- a bit like the colours that can be found on Chinese costumes. I find this inspirational because it illustrates the title of the song, with an old fashion look (the writing) which tells the audience already that this song is based on the verge of tradition, fashion and dreams.
Everything is spot on the theme of China, which is effective but the contrast in this that we can see is the man- he stands out because he is wearing normal, modern clothes and we can tell that he is not from China. This could imply that the modern man with no tradition at all is coming for Rihanna- the beautifull Chinese Princess. I find this inspirational because the sub story illustrates everything, but describes the fairy tale love story between two people from different traditions.

Katy Perry- Roar

I find this song really inspirational because it reminds me a lot of our preliminary task. I like the fact that it looks fun- nothing serious and again, it illustrates the lyrics and the title of the song- "roar".

This is an extremely clever way of going to the 'real' world from the fairy tale world- and we will try ro use something like this on our prelim.

Life in the dog house

http://www.unsigned.com/lifeinadoghouse

About Artist

Life in a Doghouse began in the summer of 2004. After playing many different venues in many different bands they have all finally found the lineup that each of them had been looking for. From there, they perfected cover tunes and played them very well for the venue-goers - so good in fact that a couple of times they were told they played it better than the band who wrote it in the first place! they always made it a rule that if it were not perfect, or if any other local band played that song, they would not play it. With this being their base they quickly formed a following of local partygoers ready to rock with us.

Amy can fly- Lovers and fighters/ Foldbacks and Ciggarettes

http://www.unsigned.com/amycanfly

About Artist

Amy Can Fly was officially started on the 12th of July 2008 but for you to truely understand how the band came to be I need to take you back to the year 2005.

It was the start of secondary school and quickly a couple of bands were formed by the new students. One of these was called Self Proclaimed Messiah which was a metal band made up of Jacob Murphy on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jordan Clay on lead guitar, Daniel Ryan on bass and Daniel Palmieri on drums. They played a couple of shows as a band but could not really find a good sound. Then Daniel P left the band and Jacob decided to fill in the position as the band's drummer which led to Daniel R becoming the new rhythm guitarist. The band now needed a bass player. They were looking around for a bass player when they found Josh Milgate who was from another band that was not working out very well so Josh said yes to this new opportunity and became the fourth member. At this point in time the band decided that they needed a new name. And Peace Of Mind was born.

The band fell apart and nothing really happened for about 18 months. There were a few different bands that they got involved with but none of them stuck. There were alot of musicians in that time who helped to develop the guys into who they would become when Amy Can Fly was formed.

About Band

The story of The Nites begins back in 2003, when a barman named Ant met a cleaner named Mike. One day, Anthony came home from work to get ready for a gig that night and found Mike cleaning his apartment. Back then Mike worked for a cleaning company that cleaned Anthony's apartment once a week. Mike had been asked to fill in that day for a sick member of staff and visited Anthony's apartment for the first time. They acknowledged each other briefly before Anthony went to get ready. Shortly after, he heard music coming from the lounge and went out to discover Mike singing a song on his beloved vintage Martin guitar that his uncle left him. But he soon forgot all about this when he tuned into what Mike was playing. After finding out it was one of his own tracks they instantly geled. After talking about their styles and influences and getting to know each other, they started writing the very next day and after 3 years of hard work enlisted the help of Craig Powell, head of the Songmaker Group, who instantly saw their talent and song writing capabilities. Currently in the recording studio laying down their debut album, so expect good things from The Nites in the future.
